How This 2026 Paycheck Tax Calculator Works
CalcHarborHub estimates U.S. employee take-home pay from gross pay per period. Federal income tax withholding uses the 2026 IRS Percentage Method for automated payroll systems. The calculator also separates employee Social Security and Medicare taxes so you can see where your paycheck goes.
Federal withholding
Your filing status, pay frequency and optional Form W-4 Steps 2, 3 and 4 can change federal withholding. This is paycheck withholding, not a prediction of your final federal tax return.
Social Security & Medicare
For 2026, employee Social Security tax is 6.2% up to the $184,500 wage base. Medicare is 1.45% with no wage-base limit. Employers also withhold an additional 0.9% Medicare tax after wages paid by that employer exceed $200,000 for the year.
State tax
State withholding rules vary widely. The optional state-rate field is intentionally labeled as an estimate. Enter 0 if you want a federal-only paycheck estimate.
Paycheck Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate federal income tax per paycheck?
Employers generally use IRS withholding methods together with your taxable wages, payroll frequency and Form W-4 information. This calculator annualizes the current taxable paycheck and applies the 2026 IRS automated Percentage Method, then converts the result back to a per-paycheck estimate.
Why is take-home pay lower than gross pay?
Gross pay is your earnings before withholding and deductions. Take-home pay is what remains after items such as federal withholding, Social Security, Medicare, state tax and employee benefit deductions entered in the calculator.
Does a 401(k) reduce Social Security and Medicare tax?
A traditional 401(k) contribution generally reduces federal income-tax wages but is generally still subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes. The calculator therefore treats the dedicated retirement contribution field differently from qualifying FICA-exempt pre-tax benefits.
Does this calculator file taxes or replace payroll software?
No. It is an independent educational planning tool. It does not file payroll or tax forms and is not affiliated with the IRS.
